5 Of The Best Italian Restaurants In Richmond, VA
Italian food is a classic, a staple around the world, and a comfort food for many. As one of the most popular types of food there is, how could anybody possibly choose their favorite? The truth is that sometimes you can’t, but that won’t stop us from trying! So here they are, 5 of our favorite Italian restaurants in Richmond.
8 1/2
8 1/2 is an Italian takeout spot you don’t want to miss. Make that two takeout spots, as they opened a second 8 1/2 in Church Hill to complement the location in The Fan (and we are so glad they did, because it is a consistent favorite on our Church Hill Food Tour)! Known for their pizzas (both red and white) and hearty pasta dishes, you’ll know you’re in the right place by the intoxicating smell of good food wafting out the door.
Bacchus
This authentic Italian spot hides in plan sight on Main St. in the Fan, its small neon blue sign one of the only indications of its existence. But step inside Bacchus, and be pleasantly overwhelmed by the smell of freshly baked rolls, pan-seared meats, and abundant olive oil. We recommend literally any of the pasta dishes.
Dinamo
Dinamo Richmond is another well-loved Italian restaurant in RVA. Actually, make that Italian/Mediterranean/Jewish. Where else in Richmond can you get Ricotta Gnocchi Bolognese and a bowl of Matzo Ball Soup? You know it’s good when it comes from the minds behind other legendary spots in RVA (RIP Mamma Zu).
Edo’s Squid
This VCU-area restaurant is beloved by many in the Richmond region. The ambience is that of a bustling Italian neighborhood favorite – a little noisy, a lot of character, and heaping dishes served family-style. Of course, you can’t go wrong with anything squid (it’s literally in the name), but everything on the menu at Edo’s is authentically excellent.
La Grotta
Showcasing the best in Northern Italian cuisine, La Grotta moved from its longtime home in Shockoe Bottom to Broad Street downtown. But don’t let its location inside a hotel turn you away – this is the real deal. Chef/owner Antonio was born in Italy, attended culinary school at age 15, and has been cooking ever since.
