Outdoor & Active Activities
Hike The James River
Do you and your friends like a good urban hike? Discover Richmond Tours provides an easy-to-moderate, guided hike of the James River, including parts of Brown’s Island, Belle Isle, RVA’s Buttermilk Trail, and two pedestrian bridges. Plus, we’ll take a walk on the Pipeline, one of Richmond’s coolest hidden gems followed by some epic mural watching. This is a great outdoorsy activity that gets the day started on the right foot!
Picnic On The Rocks At Belle Isle
Grab your friends, a yummy lunch, and a towel and head across the pedestrian bridge to Belle Isle, Richmond’s urban nature escape. You’ll find hiking trails, abandoned ruins, and (depending on the James River’s current water level) an abundance of flat rocks on which to soak up the sun, dip in the river, listen to music, and do other picnic-y things. Be sure to head out there on a weekday, if possible – it can get pretty crowded on weekends!
Climb The Walls At Peak Experiences
If you like group activities that involve working together, facing your fears, and stretching your limits, look no further than Richmond’s indoor rock climbing gym. With climbing routes for all skill levels that extend up to 50 feet high, you can celebrate reaching new heights (literally) while doing something totally unique.
Cultural Activities
Visit The World-Class VMFA, Followed By Drinks At Amuse
Richmond is home to one of the world’s most prolific Fine Arts museums. Whether you’re interested in ancient art and sculptures, classical European art, or something more modern, this free museum will have something to interest you. Make sure to check out the downstairs rotating exhibit (paid), which will be sure to wow you and your friends. Exhibits have ranged from Terracotta Army soldiers, to Chihuly blown glass, to Faberge Eggs. And when you’ve had enough of gazing at some of the finest works ever made, head over to Amuse, the classy 2nd-floor bar and restaurant inside the museum.
Walk The Gardens At Lewis Ginter
If you’re looking for a cultural activity that also allows your group to take advantage of perfect weather, you’ll want to check out the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Just as with the VMFA, there’s plenty of art to capture your attention, only this art is alive. Don’t miss the Cherry Tree walk if you visit during the spring!
