8 Of The Best Sushi Restaurants In Richmond, VA
If you’re like us, sushi is a main food group. But sushi is also one of those things that needs to always be great – “okay” sushi is never okay! And so we want to prepare you with our list of 8 amazing sushi joints in Richmond we’re always excited about. Try them all, and let us know which you like best!
Akida
Akida is THE place for sushi in Richmond, it seems. Since 2015, Akida has been named Style Weekly’s best local sushi restaurant, and for very good reason. The sushi is fresh tasting and beautifully presented, and reasonably priced! If you’re planning on a dinner date, consider getting there early, as the space is pretty small and can fill up quickly!
Fighting Fish
Originally a Jackson Ward sushi joint, Scott’s Addition is now lucky to call home to the delicious Fighting Fish! You can’t go wrong with the traditional rolls here, but we highly recommend going creative and grabbing something like the Fighting Fish Tower (stacked layers of tuna, spicy salmon poke, shredded spicy tuna, lump crab, avocado, and rice, served with house-made wonton chips). We also love the sushi burritos. All of them.
Hiro Sushi
Hiro Sushi on Midlothian Turnpike has a developed loyal following, though it feels like the best-kept secret in the Richmond sushi scene, perhaps owing to it’s strip mall location. Universally praised for attentive service as well as fresh, high-quality sushi, it deserves it’s spot among the top sushi spots in the city. And the saucy drawings on each plate add a nice touch!
Lucky AF
Lucky AF (Asian Fusion – get your head out of the gutter!) is a modern sushi spot in Scott’s Addition. Master Sushi Chef Hai Truong has a unique approach to sushi, and we are here for it! The Poke Bowls are a no-brainer, but our favorite rolls include the Batman Roll (spicy tuna and crunch, topped with tempura kani, avocado, and finished with sweet soy) and the Galaga Roll (spicy salmon, crunch, sweet Thai sauce, wasabi aioli, jalapeño sauce, red onion, jalapeño, and cilantro).
You can find Lucky AF on our Scott’s Addition Booze & Bites Tour, offered every Friday at 2PM!
Momotaro
If you’re looking for that amazing hole-in-the-wall sushi spot, look no farther than Momotaro in Carytown. This seemingly small restaurant has a lot to offer. Like some spice? Go for the tasty hot mama roll. Crunchy? Try the crazy dragon roll. More of a traditional sushi person? Then the Sashimi and Nigiri are great choices. Any way you decide to go, Momotaro won’t disappoint – on flavor or price.
Osaka Sushi & Steak
Near the University of Richmond campus, Osaka has made a name for itself as a must-try sushi restaurant. It offers up more than just sushi, but the fish is really what we recommend. We love the River Roll (presumably named after it’s location near the James): Cucumber, kani, avocado, spicy sauce & crunch on top!
Sticky Rice
Ah, Sticky Rice. You might not expect a late-night bar known for trivia, Blingo, and tater tots to have a devotion to high-quality sushi. But let us tell you what… Sticky Rice does high-quality, unique sushi. Whether it’s the Godzirra Roll (crunchy shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, spicy sauce, and cucumbers) or the Sargasso Sea Roll (broiled eel, lump crab meat, cucumbers, and tobiko), you’ll find plenty of unusual and delicious options here. But do get the tater tots.
Sushi King
It’s true, an all-you-can-eat sushi spot with a name like Sushi King doesn’t automatically conjure thoughts of quality, but this place is absolutely worth the price. The rolls are great, and paired with hibachi style platters and delicious appetizers, you can’t go wrong. From the spicy tuna to the banana-infused monkey roll, there are options for everyone.
