11 Of The Best Taco Spots In Richmond, VA
If there’s one thing Richmonders love as much as – or maybe even more than – craft beer and brunch, it’s tacos. Out with Taco Tuesdays, and in with Tacos Every Day! From brick and mortar to food trucks, this city has some insanely delicious tacos, and we’ve done the necessary leg work to find the best taco spots in Richmond!
*We reserve the right to update this list often because RVA encourages taco innovation!
Cochiloco
Scott’s Addition finally got itself an incredible taco joint in Cochiloco! Right across the street from Väsen, Cochiloco is owned by the same folks behind Y Tu Mamá, so you know you’re getting the real deal. Take a step inside, and it’s like you’ve walked right into a taqueria in the heart of Mexico City. From Carne Asada Tacos to Tacos Dorados (fried tacos) to Quesabirria Tacos, there is no short of taco deliciousness here.
We’re excited to welcome Cochiloco to our Scott’s Addition Booze & Bites Tour lineup!
Kahlo’s Taqueria & Bar
Sitting on a lovely corner of Church Hill/Union Hill is Kahlo’s Taqueria & Bar, an authentic Mexican restaurant with tacos that might just transport you abroad. The inside is bright and vibrant with classic touches (nothing cliche) and the food is fresh every day. Our favorite taco on the menu is the Chori Steak (grilled steak with chorizo and cheese dip – we mean, COME ON!)
You can find Kahlo’s on Discover Richmond Tours’ Church Hill Food Tour, offered every Saturday and Sunday!
Wong Gonzalez
We’re sure you’ve heard us mention Wong Gonzalez once or twice (or 50 times – it’s fine, we don’t have a problem). This Asian-Mexican fusion restaurant in Richmond’s Arts District serves up some of the finest tacos we’ve tried in Richmond. The Beef Szechuan Taco is a fan favorite (just ask the thousands of people we’ve served it to on food tours!), made with braised Szechuan beef, chorizo, hoisin, pico, cabbage, crispy shallots, and cilantro.
You can find Wong Gonzalez on Discover Richmond Tours’ Arts District Food Tour!
Boka Tako
The first Boka Tako Truck rolled into Richmond in 2010, right as the food truck scene was exploding around the country. Boka Tako (spelled with a K because these aren’t ordinary takos) serves up tacos with seasonal ingredients inspired by both Asian and Mexican cuisine. We personally love The Gauntlet, which is all three of their signature tacos, each in a signature style! Make sure to follow them on Facebook for the updated list of where to find the truck.
Don’t Look Back
Don’t Look Back is the chill neighborhood taco joint you visit when you’re craving really delicious, fresh tacos, a solid, housemade margarita, and some down time. You can find DLB Triple on the edge of Scott’s Addition on Broad Street. We’re partial to the Carnitas served traditional (with red onions, cilantro, and lime), but the Potato or Breakfast served gringo style (with cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and salsa) are killer, too.
En Su Boca
First of all, the name is epic. Second, En Su Boca serves up insanely good tacos (and burritos!) in Richmond’s growing Broad and Boulevard neighborhood. En Su Boca’s menu is inspired by San Francisco’s Mission District; they use authentic Mexican ingredients with a Richmond-style flair. You don’t want to miss out on the Braised Chicken Tinga or Carne Asada tacos (better yet, get both)!
Soul Taco
Soul Taco made national headlines with a spot on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives! Soul Taco, located in Shockoe Slip, combines flavors and tastes of Latin America, comfort and nostalgia of the South, and vibrant ingredients and California-style cooking. We can eat the Buttermilk Battered Fried Chicken taco all day, every day. Plus, we love Soul Taco’s mantra: “Because a taco with no soul is just a sandwich.”
Tacos Mexico
When you want no frills and just darn good Mexican-style tacos, Tacos Mexico is your place! Located off Jefferson Davis Highway, this taqueria is as authentic as they get. Everything is cooked to order (and right in front of you), so you’re getting the freshest, hottest tacos off the grill. The salsas are bonkers good, and we love the steak, but recommend everything on the menu!
Taqueria Panchito
On RVA’s Southside, right on Midlothian Turnpike, sits Taqueria Panchito, a small, unassuming taco spot that you should definitely find yourself at one day. You’ll find everything from tortas to burritos to tacos here, with carne asada and chorizo headlining the show. Taqueria Panchito also has several taco trucks, which you can find hanging around at festivals and various breweries in Scott’s Addition every Sunday! A note of warning: The “Atomic Bomb” hot sauce is legitimately the spiciest thing ever!
TBT El Gallo
After 92 pop ups, TBT El Gallo opened as a brick and mortar location on Cary Street near VCU, and we’re all better for it. Owner El Gallo (a nickname bestowed upon him by his grandfather) is a Mexican chef slinging up some of the most authentic tacos you’ve ever tasted. Our personal favorites are the Chicken Tinga Tu Madre (with bacon jam!) and the Tierra Santa (vegetarian).
Y Tu Mamá
If you haven’t tried the Quesabirria Tacos from Y Tu Mamá yet, run, don’t walk. Located in the Veil Brewing taproom in Forest Hill, this Mexican food kitchen is a must-visit for anyone craving the perfect combination of meat, cheese, and beef consomme. These require infinity napkins, but we promise they are worth the drip.
