Pack A Riverfront Birthday Picnic
A quintessential Richmond birthday could involve packing a birthday picnic to enjoy on The James! Pick up all the necessary goods at a local market (we love Stella’s – grab a variety of pre-made meals, snacks, and beverages) and head down to Brown’s Island, the Manchester Climbing Wall, or Belle Isle. There are tons of great spaces to picnic with a significant other, or a whole group of friends!
Hike The James
Interested in a great urban hike in Richmond? Look no further than the downtown area surrounding the James River. Discover Richmond Tours offers guided hikes, including parts of Browns Island, Belle Isle, the Buttermilk Trail, and a spectacular mural walk after discovering the Pipeline! We love hiking in RVA – you’ll feel lost in nature while being in the heart of downtown!
Or Hike To A Brewery
Take advantage of the James River Park System and hike through the woods to a great brewery (you won’t even realize you’re in the city)! Park at the Pump House Park and walk across the Nickel Bridge (or Boulevard Bridge, if you prefer) to the head of the Buttermilk Trail. Follow the trail to Railroad Ave., past the Manchester Climbing Wall, all the way to Legend Brewing Company or Basic City Brewery. It’s a great way to spend some time outdoors and then reward yourself with some great views of the James and an ice cold beer!
Or Just Bar Crawl Through Scott’s Addition
In the past few years, Scott’s Addition has gone from a bustling industrial center to a hub for Richmond’s beverage scene, and we don’t just mean beer. Celebrate your birthday with a taste of RVA! The neighborhood includes Ardent Craft Ales, Bingo Beer Co., Black Heath Meadery, Brambly Park, Buskey Cider, Isley Brewing Company, Reservoir Distillery, Starr Hill, Three Notch’d Brewing Company, Väsen Brewing Company, and The Veil Brewing. Scott’s Addition does not mess around!
Rent A Bus & Drink/Eat Around RVA
If a bar crawl isn’t really your speed, you can always rent our (new!) super comfy, climate-controlled, 14-passenger bus with Bluetooth capabilities so you can jam out to your own music. We’ll take you anywhere you want to go, or get in touch and let us help you plan an itinerary!
Enjoy A Game Night Out
Celebrate your birthday with a game night out – Richmond has a ton of options for you! Head to Circuit Bar Arcade or Bingo Beer Co. for a night of arcade games and libations. Interested in boutique bowling? Rent a lane at River City Roll! Or check out some Hifalutin’ mini golf and play a round (with a delicious cocktail) at Hotel Greene downtown!
Learn To Salsa Or Bachata
Put on your dancing shoes and think outside the box a bit! Celebrate your birthday in Richmond by taking a Latin dance class! Havana ’59 offers introductory Salsa and Bachata lessons from 8-9 p.m. on Thursdays, followed by three hours of dancing. There’s a small cover charge of $5, but that includes the salsa lesson, too.
Spend Your Birthday Week At Trivia
Treat yourself to a work week of birthday celebrations and head to trivia Monday-Thursday! Monday night: Head to The Answer in the near West End. Tuesday night: You can’t go wrong by heading to New York Deli in Carytown. Wednesday night: Make your way to Penny Lane Pub downtown for Trivia with Ben and Patrick (voted Richmond Magazine’s Best Trivia in Richmond two years running now)! Thursday night: Head to Scott’s Addition’s Väsen Brewing.
Bike Richmond
Another great Richmond birthday option is to dust off those bikes and explore the city! Richmond has some great biking trails downtown, and in particular, the Virginia Capital Trail! Throw your bike on the GRTC Pulse and get off at Rockett’s Landing (or start biking at Mile Marker 51.2 in Shockoe Bottom), then hop on the trail for the full ride (that’s 100 miles!) or just ride out and back as far as your legs will take you. Check the map for some yummy stops along the way.
